Back
in June of 2007, Brian Smith started doing an internet radio show called
"The Midday BS" from 10am - 2pm every weekday on CFMMusic.com,
the self proclaimed "#1 Internet Radio Station," run by
"Uncle Mike" Selvanto. Brian took
great pride in doing his show and was excited to show off his talents and
useless pop culture knowledge. Often times, Brian would invite his
late friend Dave to stay and do the show with him, which made for great
radio banter between the two men.
For several weeks, "Uncle Mike" put Brian through
format changes daily which disheartened Brian and angered the listeners of
the show which had come to like the way Brian was doing his show and the
type of music he was playing when he got to choose his own music.
"The Midday BS" was originally slated to be a
"70's and 80's heavy Adult Contemporary" show that included
features like, "The Midday BS Soundtrack Songs of the Day,"
"The 80's Midday Lunch Break," and "BS Artist of the
Day."
After "Uncle Mike" started changing the format on
him, Brian was forced to play music that his listeners didn't want to
hear. One day it was all 50's and 60's music, one day it was all
country music and another day he almost had to play nothing but Latin
music. At the end, seeing these format changes were not breaking
Brian's stride, "Uncle Mike" even went so far as to set up an
elaborate ruse and put a foul mouthed "sidekick" with Brian
called "Bobby Flanagan" who was later to be revealed as Bridget
Brown, a girl who had interviewed with "Uncle Mike" for a DJ
position with CFMMusic.com.
The "Bobby Flanagan" episode of "The Midday
BS" marked it's ultimate demise.
Listeners of the show were outraged with the format changes that
"Uncle Mike" had imposed and did not like the "Bobby
Flanagan" stunt at all. They emailed "Uncle Mike" and
let him know under no uncertain terms that they wanted to hear the show as
Brian used to do it, the way it was originally conceived. This
resulted in "Uncle Mike" promptly canceling the show later that
afternoon after Brian had left.
In the middle of July, exactly six days after "The
Midday BS" got cancelled, so did CFMMusic.com. Differences
between "Uncle Mike" and "Cousin Steve" Palo caused the
severing of their business parnership, and the radio
station closed down.
By the
end of July, 2007, Brian decided that he really enjoyed doing his show and
felt that he should continue to do it, but that it couldn't be done at
CFMMusic.com due to the constant creative differences between "Uncle
Mike" and himself, despite "Uncle Mike" asking repeatedly if
Brian was ready to come back and do things the way "Uncle Mike"
wanted them done.
Brian bided his time and made preparations to launch his own
radio station on the internet. And thus, by the end of August 2007,
with the help of his fiancée Deb, and some of his friends, he gathered the
necessary finances and resources to build BPSRadio.com. BPS are
Brian's initials and thought that it suited the new vision that he had for
his radio station: a station run by him, programmed by him, with the music
that people want to hear. While sticking primarily within the
"no rap, no hip-hop, no country" limitations, he decided that he
wanted to play music for the masses. His new motto? "Playing
what you want to hear!"
"The Morning Rant," BPSRadio.com's
morning show, started broadcasting live on Monday, December 3rd,
2007 and starts at 8am and runs until noon, EST. Replays of each
day's show play at 4pm that same day. Occasionally on nights and
weekends when Brian has free time, he'll often go live on the air and play
music request shows for his audience.
Two listeners from his CFM days, Tony and Nika
had followed Brian's progress and started listening when he started
BPSRadio.com. Nika suggested that Brian
call his new show, "The Midnight Music Whore Radio Show".
Brian was curious about how the name would be perceived but Nika explained that it was innocent enough.
"You are on the air around midnight, and you whore yourself out to
play the hard music we all want to hear," Nika
explained. It all made sense to Brian and the name stuck. On
December 10, 2007, "The Midnight Music Whore Radio Show" was
born! Brian did both "The Morning Rant" and "The
Midnight Music Whore Radio Show" for several weeks but eventually it got
to be too much to do both radio shows. In the long run, "The
Midnight Music Whore Radio Show" won out as the more popular show and
still runs till this day.
In November
of 2008, Brian entered into a partnership with another radio group called
LoseTheRadio.com and started simulcasting live
streams of that station's radio shows which previously could only be heard
on PalTalk. The test show for this venture
was Broadcasting Under the Influence or BUI Radio. The show was a
successful addition to BPSRadio's programming
schedule which prompted the partnership to add other LoseTheRadio.com shows
like "The Clutch and Wiggle Experience", "Fred From
Brooklyn" and "The NoFate and Razor
Show."
During this partnership
with LoseTheRadio, BPSRadio's website was updated
by Wayne from BUI Radio to reflect what you see today. BPSRadio's new updated logo is courtesy of "Martianvirus" from the LoseTheRadio.net Message
Board of which BPSRadio is an integral part.
In late 2009, BPSRadio began hosting downloads of a show on
SiriusXM Satellite Radio called
"Weird Medicine". In their
contract negotiations with Dr. Steve, the show's main host, SiriusXM
decreed that the show audio could no longer be hosted on www.drsteve.com,
the show's website. BPSRadio.com
believing in free speech and in an effort to broaden the listenership of
"Weird Medicine" for those who were unable to listen to it when
it aired, started hosting the downloads in "pirated" format on
the BPSRadio site.

In October of 2010, MJ Mandalay purchased LoseTheRadio from its
owner and turned it into "MJMandalay.com - THE Multimedia Message
Board". BPSRadio continued to
be an integral part of the shows on the MJM Network, which includes,
"Hate Speech Radio", "UnLEARN",
"HippoJuice", "The Radio
Freaks", "The Clutch & Wiggle Experience", "Stugots Puppet", "BUI Radio" and "The
Filler Show".
